The humble crumble is the quickest and easiest dessert you can make. It is a classic and no matter what the food trends are, I guarantee it will be popular.
INGREDIENTS
FOR THE FILLING
1kg Braeburn, Granny Smith or Ballarat apples, peeled, cored and cut into a 2cm dice
½ cup raw castor sugar
2tbsps lemon juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2tsps corn flour
CRUMBLE TOPPING
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup desiccated coconut
½ cup sliced almonds
150g butter, melted
½ cup raw castor sugar
1tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg, freshly grated
METHOD
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
Combine all the filling ingredients into a 1.5 litre capacity ovenproof dish.
To make the crumble topping, combine all the dry crumble ingredients in a bowl. Pour in the butter and rub until the mixture resembles crumbs.
Spoon the crumble mixture over the apple and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the crumble is golden. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
Cook’s note: You can make crumble with just about any fruit combination. You can try with berries or stone fruit or feijoa.
