APPLE CRUMBLE – everyone’s favourite humble crumble

The humble crumble is the quickest and easiest dessert you can make. It is a classic and no matter what the food trends are, I guarantee it will be popular.

Apple crumble with vanilla icecream

1kg Braeburn, Granny Smith or Ballarat apples, peeled, cored and cut into a 2cm dice

½ cup raw castor sugar

2tbsps lemon juice

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2tsps corn flour

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup rolled oats

½ cup desiccated coconut

½ cup sliced almonds

150g butter, melted

½ cup raw castor sugar

1tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg, freshly grated

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.

Combine all the filling ingredients into a 1.5 litre capacity ovenproof dish.

To make the crumble topping, combine all the dry crumble ingredients in a bowl. Pour in the butter and rub until the mixture resembles crumbs.

Spoon the crumble mixture over the apple and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the crumble is golden. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Cook’s note: You can make crumble with just about any fruit combination. You can try with berries or stone fruit or feijoa.
